El pasado domingo 28 de noviembre falleció Justo Gallego Martínez, labriego, arquitecto autodidacta y constructor de su propia catedral, situada en el municipio de Mejorada del Campo a unos 20 km de la Ciudad de Madrid.
La catedral tiene unos 4700 m2, una extensión similar a la Catedral de la Almudena en Madrid o la Basílica de la Sagrada Familia en Barcelona. Consta de una cúpula de 35 metros de altura y 22 de diámetro, mientras que las dos torres de la fachada principal alcanzarían una altura de 60 metros. En altura es ligeramente inferior a la catedral de la Almudena y notablemente inferior a la Catedral de la Sagrada Familia. El diámetro de la cúpula es comparable al de la Catedral de la Almudena y un poco más reducido que el de la cúpula del capitolio de EE.UU.
Es, por tanto, un edificio de unas dimensiones bastante relevantes que tiene tres peculiaridades que lo hacen único en el mundo.
La primera de ellas es la financiación: la Catedral de la Almudena ha tenido un amplio apoyo financiero de fuentes públicas y privadas, y según algunas estimaciones podrían sumar entorno a 24.000 millones de pesetas (unos 144 millones de €). Asimismo, en la Sagrada Familia se prevé gastar otros 374 millones de € para completar la edificación en 2026. Obviamente ambos edificios han tenido una complejidad edificatoria que ha justificado el enorme esfuerzo financiero y humano, y ha sido muy correcto haber realizado estas inversiones. Son importantes sedes de la fe en las ciudades de Madrid y Barcelona, y además son dos poderosos símbolos del paisaje urbano y de la identidad de dichas ciudades.
Sin embargo, dejando a un lado las notables diferencias constructivas de estas dos basílicas respecto a la de Mejorada del Campo, llama poderosamente la atención la escasa financiación con la que se ha construido la catedral de Justo hasta ahora. Según afirmaciones de Justo, la edificación se ha financiado con su patrimonio personal, resultado de una herencia de tierras de uso agrícola que eran propiedad de sus padres. También ha recibido donaciones de los visitantes de la Catedral. Según el propio Justo, llegaron a representar 40 millones de pesetas (unos 240.000 €).
El segundo aspecto a destacar es el personal de construcción de esta edificación. Los importantes presupuestos de las catedrales anteriormente mencionadas han permitido contratar un amplio número de empleados así como medios técnicos imprescindibles como por ejemplo grúas y maquinaria pesada. En cambio, todo el equipo de construcion de la catedral de Justo ha estado formado por una sola persona: Justo, el cual, ha trabajado diariamente durante 60 años, desde el año 1961 hasta hace poco menos de un año, cuando quedó convaleciente en la cama. Se levantaba para trabajar a las 4 de la mañana y terminaba a las 6 de la tarde. Todos los días eran aptos para trabajar, incluso los 30 días que podría dedicar a sus vacaciones, sin embargo, se reservaba un día a la semana: los domingos que los dedicaba al Señor. Toda esta actividad laboral la solía acompañar con intensos ayunos. Aunque, para su alivio y conforto, desde hace 20 años recibió la ayuda ocasional de Ángel, su ayudante, que con el paso del tiempo pasó a ser permanente y definitiva.
Para finalizar, lo más llamativo de todo es que mientras la catedral de Madrid y Barcelona han sido diseñadas por arquitectos de gran prestigio internacional y han contado con el apoyo de asesores especializados y reputados, Justo ha realizado esta obra sin ningún plano y, naturalmente, sin ningún conocimiento previo de Arquitectura, más allá de los libros de catedrales románicas que había leído antes de comenzar a construir la obra.
¿Cómo lo ha hecho? Además de la constancia y perseverancia de su idea, ha construido su Catedral con medios muy precarios e ingeniosos. Por ejemplo, al no disponer de encofrados para realizar las columnas, usó bidones de gasolina como los que se empleaban antiguamente y los rellenaba de cemento y hierro. También recogía el material constructivo desechado por fábricas cercanas que hubiera salido defectuoso y que no se habría podido vender. De este modo recibió muchos ladrillos y material similar.
Ha empleado todo tipo de elementos y métodos improvisados para edificar. Por ejemplo, en la cripta todavía se pueden ver algunas tablas colgando del techo improvisadas como encofrado. Igualmente, ha usado muelles como componente de acero de algunas columnas.
Lo curioso de todo ello es que recientemente, una empresa se ha dispuesto a analizar la seguridad de las estructuras de la edificación, digitalizando la construcción en 3D, analizando la resistencia de los materiales con un sonar y tomando muestras de la profundidad y calidad de los cimientos. La conclusión de dicho estudio es que la estructura del edificio es sólida. Ello queda también demostrado por el peso que tuvo que soportar la edificación durante el temporal filomena, o tras el paso de camiones de gran tonelaje en el suelo de la catedral, esto es, encima de la cripta.
Cabe decir que esta historia parece que va a tener final feliz, ya que la fundación “Mensajeros por la Paz” asume la gestión de las obras y, según parece, el templo se completará en dos años.
Este proyecto no se ha realizado sin la burla e incredulidad de los vecinos, que le vieron poner los cimientos por primera vez y que en no pocos casos lo tomaron por un loco. Sin embargo, en la actualidad, la edificación está muy avanzada y es posible entender la enorme tarea que ha realizado Justo en la construcción del templo.
Francamente, no creo que se trate de un ejemplo más de superación personal, sino de todo un milagro. Este es un proyecto que asumido por cualquier otra persona que no tuviese fe, sería absolutamente inabordable por muy obstinada que fuera. Verdaderamente Justo ha puesto en práctica el evangelio al dedicar su vida a la construcción de la basílica. Su actitud ha sido como la del hombre que descubre un tesoro enterrado en el campo, vende todo lo que tiene y lo compra (Mt 13,44). Justo podría haber escogido vivir mejor gracias a su patrimonio e incluso invertirlo en algo más productivo que lo incrementara. Podría haber pasado menos frío o sufrido menos las molestias inherentes a la tarea de la construcción, o al menos podría haber trabajado sin hambre. Sin embargo, decidió no vivir para su agrado, sino para agradar a Dios. Nadie tiene tanta constancia, ni siquiera un loco si es que no cuenta con la ayuda de Dios. Igualmente, también su vida recuerda al versículo evangélico: «la piedra que desecharon los arquitectos es ahora la piedra angular (Mt 21,42)».
Desde el punto de vista de la sostenibilidad, también cabe decir que, aunque no era la intención de Justo ceñirse a ningún principio de sostenibilidad en la edificación del templo, lo cierto es que precisamente esta construcción cumple con bastantes de las indicaciones incluidas en la agenda de la ONU 2030. Por ejemplo, se adecúa al objetivo 11 sobre edificaciones sostenibles y la reutilización de materiales de desecho, evitando así la generación de residuos contaminantes.
Por último, huelga decir que una edificación iniciada en 1961 como está, habría sido imposible construirla en la Rusia o Polonia comunistas de aquellos años. Sirva como ejemplo la presión del gobierno comunista para que no se construyera ninguna iglesia en Nowa Hutta, barrio comunista de reciente creación en la ciudad de Cracovia.
Finalmente, tanto el municipio de Mejorada, como la Comunidad de Madrid, como el obispado de Alcalá de Henares, deberían tomar en consideración la gran capacidad de atracción del centro suscitada por la fe de los visitantes que amenaza con crecer mucho más, pero también por el enorme simbolismo de este templo que tiene una gran proyección internacional por el tremendo mensaje que implicó su construcción. Puede convertirse en todo un hito en el paisaje urbano de la comunidad de Madrid, y no digamos ya en Mejorada de Campo, que lo ha puesto en el mapa.
