Según los datos que aporta Fides, en las dos primeras décadas del siglo XXI han sido asesinados 536 misioneros en todo el mundo.

Una lista que no solo incluye a los misioneros ad gentes en sentido estricto, sino a todos los católicos comprometidos de alguna manera en la actividad pastoral que hayan muerto de forma violenta, aunque no necesariamente por odio a la fe, por lo cual la agencia prefiere usar el término «testigos» en vez de «mártires» mientras no haya un juicio de la Iglesia al respecto.

Del mismo modo, se considera «misionero» a todo bautizado en labores de evangelización, aunque no sea un consagrado.

En 2021, 22 misioneros fueron asesinados en todo el mundo

La agencia Fides, órgano de información de las Obras Misionales Pontificias, ha informado de que a lo largo del años 2021 fueron asesinados en todo el mundo 22 misioneros: 13 sacerdotes, 1 religioso, 2 religiosas y 6 laicos.

África fue el lugar con mayor número de estos crímenes, 11, por 7 en América (ambos continentes suelen alternarse como los más peligrosos), 3 en Asia y uno en Europa, el padre Olivier Maire, misionero montfortiano a quien mató en agosto un inmigrante ruandés a quien el mismo había acogido y que estaba acusado del incendio de la catedral de Nantes en 2020.

También adquirió gran resonancia el asesinato de la misionera laica italiana Nadia de Munari, víctima de un criminal que la mató a machetazos tras treinta años de entrega a los más pobres.
