El 18 de julio, fecha de conmemoración del inicio de la Guerra Civil Española, un grupo de separatistas radicales profanó una cripta de la Abadía de Montserrat. El grupo, autodenominado «Acció per la Independencia», destruyó emblemas de los requetés carlistas que lucharon durante la contienda en el bando franquista. Los asaltantes han anunciado que esto es el principio de una campaña de acciones… curiosamente, otra de sus quejas es la no destrucción del Monumento a los Caídos de Tortosa (que incluye una cruz)… ¿separatismo o cristianofobia?
El grupo separatista explica en un comunicado que la acción se realizó el 18 de julio por ser el aniversario del golpe de Estado que dio lugar a la guerra Civil y porque la fecha elegida para la profanación coincidía también con la fijada por el Govern para derribar el monumento a los caídos de Tortosa, acción que fue paralizada por un juez.
Además, un referéndum realizado en la localidad tuvo un resultado sorprendente: el 68% de los vecinos defendían conservar el monumento franquista, aunque no se oponían a que fuese reformulado su significado para extenderlo a todos los muertos de la famosa batalla del Ebro. A pesar de la decisión popular, Acció per la Independència considera que «la retirada del monumento fascista de Tortosa, que había de hacerse efectiva hoy, es una muestra más de cómo de imposible es hacer justicia y respetar la memoria histórica». Curiosa su idea de democracia… pretender destruir un monumento repaldado por la mayoría de Tortosa porque ellos lo han decidido…

Un comunicado de los Carlistas, aviva aún más las dudas sobre la ‘cultura’, formación e intenciones final de la acción. Carlos Javier de Borbón-Parma, líder carlista, lamentó el ataque cuando el Carlismo siempre ha defendido «un modelo federal para las Españas, compromiso que mantiene el carlismo del siglo XXI». Además, subraya que sus partidarios lucharon históricamente «por los fueros y libertades del Principado de Cataluña». También este grupo de voluntarios cuyos restos han sido profanados, a pesar de luchar con Franco, mantenían su compromiso «portando la senyera y cantando el Virolai».
